Late summer Outer Banks shrimp boils…

…typically known as a North Carolina shrimp boil, is arguably the best beach food ever! Shrimp seasons on the Outer Banks are the best way to enjoy the fresh, tasty little crustaceans. And with so many ways to do a boil, there is always something for everyone. You really almost can’t go wrong so long as you like shrimp

Preparation is as easy as throwing everything in a pot, and then sitting back and letting the magic happen. All you need is a large shrimp pot, a basket or colander, a propane tank, and a burner. Many people have their own secret family spice blend for the seasoning. To keep things simple, we just used the familiar Zatarain’s Crab Boil pouches and Old Bay Seasoning. Other basic ingredients are onions, lemons, corn on the cob, andouille sausage, and the star of the show — shrimp! Lots of folks will add or take away from this list. That’s the great thing about Outer Banks shrimp boils — everyone can customize it to include their favorites.

We’ve heard of other optional (and some unorthodox) additions including: crab legs, crawfish, hot dogs, pineapple, and orange slices (adds a nice flavor), mushrooms, garlic, asparagus, green beans, sweet potatoes, purple potatoes, tortellini, ravioli, and cauliflower just to name a few. If you decide to include any of these ingredients, just be sure to watch the cook times so you don’t overcook some of your add-ins.

However you decide to do your boil, just grab some fresh North Carolina shrimp, and have fun with some good food, some cold beer, and share it with your family and friends. Enjoy!
