Picking crabs is as much a skill as it is an art.

Those beautiful, local crustaceans everyone tries to catch and loves to eat. But have you ever felt confused by the thought of having to crack open and eat —or “pick”— a blue crab? Have you avoided ordering them in restaurants because you’re afraid you wouldn’t know what to do once they’re set before you, and they would just sit there mocking you? Well, fear no more.

We popped into I Got Your Crabs Shellfish Market and Steam Bar in Kitty Hawk to enlist their expert advice. Amber Tice is the IGYC manager. She was incredibly knowledgeable, friendly, and eager to help us out. She patiently gave us step-by-step instructions on how to pick a crab—as you can see in the helpful video below.

I Got Your Crabs Shellfish Market and Steam Bar was opened in 2012 by Hunter and Olivia Stuart. Hunter has been fishing and crabbing on the Currituck Sound his whole life, and IGYC had always been a lifelong dream. They have received an overwhelming number rave reviews with both locals and tourists alike. Particularly, they have a certificate of excellence from Trip Advisor for four years running.

Pick crabs yourself at their stainless steel bar. Conversely, you can sit back with a cold beer or a glass of wine and have their professional crab pickers do the work for you. The staff is very upbeat, attentive and ready to offer suggestions. Their menu carries great selection of complete dinners, sandwiches, fish tacos, gluten-free options, and desserts. However, we think it will be hard to go there without digging into a made-to-order tray of local blue crabs! You might catch them picking crabs with their eyes closed!
